What are sex dolls made of?
Four components make up almost every realistic doll.
A skin cast around a frame. The body is a single soft casting of silicone or TPE. Inside sits a metal skeleton, and the head, eyes, hair and makeup are added by hand afterward. The material sets most of the cost and the feel in your hands. To turn this into a buying decision, start with the Tayu Doll buying basics.
How are sex dolls made, step by step
The usual sequence inside a sex doll factory, from the first sculpt to the final check.
Sculpt the body and face
Artists sculpt a full-size body and face in clay or as a 3D model. This master sculpt sets every proportion and skin detail the finished doll will have.
Make the mold
The sculpt is copied into a multi-part mold, often fiberglass or a rigid resin. The joins between mold parts mark where trim lines appear later.
Fit the skeleton
A jointed metal skeleton is positioned inside the mold so it sits at the right depth under the skin, with bolts for the neck and, on some dolls, the feet.
Pour or inject the skin
Silicone or TPE is poured or injected around the skeleton to fill the mold. The material is usually degassed first, which keeps the skin free of bubbles.
Cure and demold
The casting sets, then the mold is opened. Workers trim the seam lines, clean the surface and fix small flaws by hand.
Paint, add hair, inspect
Makeup and body blush are painted on, eyes and lashes fitted, and a wig or implanted hair added. A final check comes before packing.
Platinum silicone vs TPE: how each is cast
Each material follows its own production path, which explains much of the price gap between them.
Mixed and cured
A two-part liquid that sets through a chemical reaction
- Starting form
- Two liquid parts, mixed
- Preparation
- Degassed in a vacuum to remove bubbles
- Setting
- Cures over hours, sometimes heat-assisted
- Offcuts
- Cured silicone cannot be remelted
- Cost
- Higher material and labor cost
Melted and cooled
A thermoplastic softened with oil and shaped by heat
- Starting form
- Pellets or blocks
- Preparation
- Melted at high temperature
- Setting
- Hardens as it cools
- Offcuts
- Can be remelted, being a thermoplastic
- Cost
- Cheaper and faster to produce
Inside the sex doll skeleton
The skeleton decides how a doll poses and how long its joints last.
- Joints that mimic a body. Shoulders, elbows, wrists, hips, knees and the spine usually have ball or hinge joints. Some skeletons add extra joints for the shoulders or waist.
- Wired fingers. Thin wires inside the fingers let them bend and hold a grip. They are the most delicate part, so slow, gentle bending keeps the wires intact.
- Bolts for options. A neck bolt lets heads swap between bodies, as our doll heads guide explains. Optional foot bolts help the doll stand with support.
- Weight-saving cores. Some bodies use foam or hollow sections in the torso or bust to cut weight without changing the outside shape.
Makeup, hair and finishing touches
Hand finishing gives two dolls from the same mold their own faces.
- Makeup painting. Artists paint lips, brows, eye shadow and blush with pigments matched to the material, and silicone makeup is often sealed to resist wear.
- Eyes and lashes. Realistic eyes are fitted into the head, and lashes are glued or implanted. Eye color is often a choice when you customize a doll.
- Wig or implanted hair. Most dolls ship with a removable wig. Implanted hair is inserted strand by strand into the scalp, which takes many hours and costs more.
- Body details. Skin texture, veins or freckles may be painted on premium models, which is one reason expensive dolls cost what they do.
Quality control: what is usually checked
Each doll is checked before packing, and a quick look when it reaches you completes the job.
Typical factory checks
- Seams trimmed and surface smooth
- Every joint moves and holds a pose
- Makeup even and fully dry
- Head fits the neck bolt firmly
- Doll wrapped and fixed in foam for shipping
Your checks on delivery
- Fingers, armpits and hips free of tears
- Material and options match your order
- Skin clean, with no marks from packing
- Photos of any damage before you move the doll
- First wash before use, as in our care guide
